Grinding & Clenching

Grinding and clenching (bruxism) are more common than you might think. The condition has many causes, ranging from stress to jaw issues, and it can cause several problems. The most obvious is a slow, steady flattening of the teeth as they wear down. Over time, this wear also causes temperature and biting sensitivity due to the exposure of the tooth’s inner layer. Lesser-known problems include broken teeth, gum recession, concave wear of the teeth at the gumline, muscle pain, and TMJ clicking.

The most common treatment is an acrylic guard to wear on the teeth at night. The investment in a proper guard is insignificant when compared to the cost of treatment after damage has occurred. A professionally made guard is preferred to store-bought ones, which are ineffective and uncomfortable to wear. We can professionally fit you with a guard that is both comfortable and minimizes mouthfeel.
